10.30am: Messy Masters Art: Self-portrait,

Da Vinci Style!

Our inspiration for today’s class is Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, which we’ll be re-creating in our own likeness! Little ones will be encouraged to observe their own features and to use paint and collage techniques to create their very own self-portraits. There are no rules – we can’t wait to see what they come up with!

Little People, Big Dreams: Frida Kahlo

Another story from the wonderful Little People, Big Dreams series by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara, today we are reading about the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. Known for her vibrant self-portraits full of colour and life, this beautifully illustrated book guides little ones gently through the challenges Frida faced and how she embraced her unique situation to create beautiful artworks.

  • Mona Lisa template - download it here

  • A mirror

  • Shaving foam

  • Skin coloured paint (try mixing your own!)

  • Googly eyes

  • Something red to make a mouth, like a pipe cleaner

  • Something to use that looks like your hair, for example brown wool


    To prepare:

  • Print out Mona Lisa template

  • Mix paint to create a skin tone similar to your own.
