Puremess

Today we're thrilled to showcase the visionary brilliance of Gemma Cockrell, the founder of artisan skincare brand Puremess. Gemma provided the fabulous prize for our recent #Styledbymychild competition and we're huge fans of her all natural heaven scented products. People launch businesses for all sorts of reasons, for Gemma, this was personal as the inspiration to launch her own skincare brand came out of her devastating second breast cancer diagnosis in 2015.

'"Although I had a healthy approach to life I I had never really taken the time to research what was actually in the skincare products I had been using, although I believed them to be natural. Using my science background I decided to take control of my own skin health and started to formulate and make my own products".

Two years later Puremess was launched, and with it's fiercely loyal customer base it's going from strength to strenth while sticking closely to it's founding principles - that each Puremess product should promote well-balance, healthy and glowing skin.

Ten questions hastily scribbled on the back of a pandemic postcard with Gemma Cockrell

1. What has 2020 taught you so far?

That I am more capable than I think I am. That I can adapt and pivot my business to meet the changing climate and that my family and friends are hugely important to me!

2. What is the best small business ‘oxygen mask’ piece of advice you could share?

Have different streams of income! So, retailers, e-commerce options etc.

3. When is the last time you laughed out loud and why?

When I told my business coach that we have a penis-shaped stain on the ceiling in our kitchen! (hope that’s not too rude).

4. What (& where) would be your dream meal?

Anything Italian, but has to be cannolis for dessert, on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts.

5. How do you think 2020 will be remembered?

Hopefully as a time for change, where we all had the time to take stock of what’s truly important to us.

6. What’s the best joke you’ve ever heard?

What did the janitor say when he jumped out of the closet? Supplies! (it’s rubbish I know!)

7. If your business life story was going to be played in a film of your life, who would play you and what would the film be called?

I love Meg Ryan ‘She got there in the end’!

8. Sum up your business style in five words or less

Adaptive, Creative, Caring.

9. What’s the most incredible thing you’ve ever seen in your life?

Dolphins swimming in a bay in Outerbanks, North Carolina.

10.What’s the first thing you will do when we come out of this pandemic?

Go to America to see my dad who has a terminal illness.
