Child psychologist Dr Maryhan Baker answers your secondary school transition concerns

Updated: Mar 27

Year 6 to secondary is a massive transition in an average year, but will be harder this year thanks to the pandemic and the any interruptions during their last two years of primary school.

We asked Dr Maryhan Baker, a child psychologist, to address general concerns around this time for your year 6 child.

"My year 6 son wants all the changes to stop and he wants things to go back to how they were when he was younger. How can I help him celebrate this transition when he doesn't want it?"

"We've not been able to visit the new secondary school at all yet and it all feels like my daughter's not been involved at all in the process of choosing of her school. All she's seen is a video, I feel like it's all going to be a big overwhelming rush for her between now and September, how can I help?"
